How To Fix Aftershokz Headphone Not Charging? – 5 Fixes!
Shokz (formerly Aftershokz) is a popular brand for audio devices. Aftershokz Aeropex is one of the greatest bone conduction earphones that offers great comfort and sound quality. The earbuds give approximately 8 hours of playtime with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).
I purchased Aftershokz Aeropex OpenRun wireless bone conduction earbuds for a morning walk and cycling, but last week they stopped charging. I explored the internet and experimented with a few solutions to the charging problem.
Read this guide if your Aftershokz headphone is not charging with a magnetic charger. I’ll provide you with some easy methods to fix the charging issue.
Why Does My Aftershokz Headphone Not Charging?
Your AfterShokz headphone is not charging because of dirty metal contacts, a damaged magnetic charging cable, a defective wall outlet, an incorrect USB power output, or a damaged battery inside the Shokz earbuds. To fix this, you can use the secondary magnetic USB cable, clean the metal contacts, try another power source, and reset your AfterShokz to fix software glitches.
How To Fix Aftershokz Not Charging?
I cleaned the metal contacts with isopropyl alcohol and microfiber cloth on my AfterShokz earbuds and magnetic charger, and the issue was resolved. However, there are some other fixes that the Shokz customer support team recommended-
1. Clean Metal Contacts
Aftershokz Aeropex is a bone-conduction earphone that catches dust and moisture from the air. Over time, an insulative layer of dirt and moisture formed around the metal connector.
Whenever the magnetic charger attaches to it, the current doesn’t flow to the earbuds, and the battery won’t charge. This is the most common reason why Aftershokz earphone doesn’t charge.
My Shokz earphone was not charging because a layer of dust prevented the current flow. So, I cleaned the metal contacts on the earbud and magnetic charger with isopropyl alcohol and microfiber cloth.
You should also clean the metal contacts with rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth to remove the invisible insulative layer.
2. Try Another Magnetic Cable
Aftershokz provides two magnetic charging cable that recharges the battery from any USB power source. Over time, the charging cable gets damaged or frayed, and your earphone doesn’t charge.
If your AfterShokz starts charging with the new magnetic cable, it means your old cable is damaged, and you need to buy a replacement. Check the voltage difference across both cable terminals if you have a multimeter. The voltage difference should be around 5 volts. Click the buy a new cable.
3. Try Another Wall Outlet
If you’re using a smartphone power adapter to charge your Aftershokz headphones, ensure that the wall outlet is functioning properly.
You can plug your smartphone or any other device into the wall outlet to check whether it’s working. If your smartphone isn’t charging, there is a higher chance that your wall outlet is faulty.
You can try another wall outlet and check whether your Aftershokz headphone is charging. If not, move to the next solution.
4. Use Another USB Hub
Aftershokz doesn’t provide a power adapter in the box, but you can use any normal smartphone adapter to charge it. Aftershokz headphone requires 5V or 1 Amp current to charge the battery.
It’s not advisable to charge your Aftershokz with any fast chargers. If you don’t have a normal smartphone charger at home, you can try a computer USB port or power bank to charge your Aftershokz headphones. Click the buy a new cable.
5. Reset Your Aftershokz
Aftershokz OpenRun Pro is a great bone-conduction headphone that is perfect for jogging, cycling, and motorcycle riding. It comes with two equalizer modes that further enhance your comfort and music-listening experience.
But sometimes, your AfterShokz doesn’t charge or pair due to software glitches. The company regularly releases firmware updates to fix any known bugs.
However, you can reset your Aftershokz headphones to fix the software glitches.
Here are the steps to reset AfterShokz OpenRun/OpenSwim headphones-
- Go to your smartphone Bluetooth settings, unpair the Aftershokz, and forget the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up button for 3 to 5 seconds until the LED flashes Red and Blue.
- Now press and hold the Volume Up + Volume Down + Multifunction buttons together until you feel a vibration or beep sound.
- Power off your Aftershokz by holding the Volume Up button to finish the reset.
That’s it! Your Aftershokz headphone has been factory reset. Now, you can attach the magnetic charger to check whether it’s charging.
6. Leave It Connected
It won’t charge immediately if you have fully drained your Aftershokz battery. The lithium-ion battery may go into sleep mode if the battery discharges to zero percent.
If you have tried everything, but your Shokz is still not charging, please attach the magnetic charger and leave it connected for at least 3 to 4 hours.
7. Contact Customer Support
Aftershokz provides a two-year warranty on all products from most countries’ authorized retailers. If your headphone is under warranty, you can claim the replacement.
