Why is My MacBook Charger Overheating?
There could be many reasons why your MacBook charger is overheating.
One of the most common reasons for an overheating charger is that it is not getting enough airflow.
Another common reason for an overheating charger is that it is plugged into a power outlet that is not rated for high enough amperage.
Sometimes, the broken or frayed cable can also cause overheating. If you see any bare wires or frayed insulation, replace the cable immediately.
How to Fix an Overheating Charger?
If you don’t manage the heat, there is a high chance that your MacBook adapter will die soon. It is important to figure out the reason and fix the issue asap.

Here are some easy and quick solutions to fix an overheating charger:
1. Unplug it from your MacBook
If your power adapter is overheating when charging, you should first unplug it from your MacBook.
Let the adapter cool down for a few minutes before using it again.
If you don’t cool down your power adapter, then it could be damaged and can also damage your MacBook SMC controller.
2. Check the power outlet
Ensure your outlet is not damaged and can provide enough power for your MacBook charger. If the outlet is loose, try plugging it into another outlet.
If your power adapter is not heating in another outlet, it means there is no issue with the adapter, and the outlet is most likely the problem.

3. Inspect the charging cable
If your MacBook charger is still overheating, it could be because of the charging cable.
Check the cable for any damage, such as frayed insulation or bare wires.
If you see any damage, then replace the cable immediately. Always use Apple original cables to avoid any issues.
4. Clean your MacBook charging port
I recently noticed some ants coming out of my MacBook thunderbolt port. When I inspected the port, I found some debris inside the charging port.
I removed the debris carefully with a toothpick and cleaned the power with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol.
If your MacBook charger is also overheating, it could be because of the dirt and debris in your charging port.
Use a can of compressed air to clean the dust from the port. To clean the port, you can also use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol.
5. Use a cooling pad
If your MacBook gets too hot when charging, it can overheat your power adapter too. You can use a cooling pad to keep your MacBook cool while charging.
There are many different types of cooling pads available, but we recommend using one with multiple fans.
The more fans, the better airflow, and your MacBook will stay cool. Place your MacBook on the cooling pad and plug in the charger.
6. Use the original cable
I’m using a MacBook Pro M1 (2020) which has a USB type C charging port. I often charge it with my smartphone type C cable.
If you’re also using a third-party USB type C cable to charge your MacBook, this could be the reason for the power adapter overheating.
Always use the Apple original cable to charge your MacBook. The fake or cheap cables can cause many issues, including an overheating charger.
7- Charge in a cool environment
Ambient temperature can also affect how hot your MacBook charger gets. If it’s too hot in the room, it will make your MacBook and power adapter hotter.
It is best to charge your MacBook in a cool and ventilated area. You can also charge your MacBook near a window if your AC is not working.
8- Take it to Apple Care
If you have tried all the solutions and your MacBook charger is still overheating, it is time to take it to the Apple Store.
They will inspect the charger and replace it if it’s damaged. We don’t recommend opening the charger and trying to fix it yourself, as it can be very dangerous.
